Half Moon studs

Accessorize_half_moon_earrings_the_coup_blog copyI am not quite sure where my fascination with moon and stars comes from. I remember spending quite a lot of time gazing into the starry sky as a little girl, whether it was out of my bedroom window in St Petersburg or school dorm in Scotland… it was beautiful and calming, I could look at it for hours!

If you have been following The Coup for a while you would have seen me choosing gorgeous night sky inspired pieces here and there. These Accessorize studs are my latest purchase. They are very petite, but add a lovely sparkle.

I don’t know about you guys but I am the kind of person whom doesn’t like to make a fuss about Valentine’s day, yet if it’s left completely ignored, I would be secretly disappointed.

Trend Alert – Stacks on Stacks

IMG_1855

Stacking gold rings have by far been my favourite micro trend of 2013, so much so that they have become a staple addition of mine. I recently bought a few cute ring sets from H&M as you can see in the above photo. If you’re looking to invest in some stacking rings, I suggest you get these, these and these from Hennes. Then mix n match your favourite pieces. The possibilities are endless!

Outfit – Casual Florals

Denim Crop Jacket Floral Dress

Happy Monday!!

Floral prints are one of those rare prints that transcends all four seasons. We often see winter florals appear in shades of burgandy, grey, purple and so forth during the A/W season. Likewise brighter, more vibrant floral designs pop up during and throughout the S/S season. This dress is a funny one though. I bought it at Christmas but don’t you think however that it’s better suited to the S/S season? I’m loving the way it looks in the sun!

Denim Crop Jacket Floral Dress And, bonus, it’s pretty easy to dress up and down too! For a more casual look I have previously worn this dress with a pair of classic brown brogues and cute ankles socks. Today however, I’m emulating a feminine and more youthful look by sporting nude heels and a casual denim crop jacket.

Red Nails Red Dress

The dress’s lightweight material means that I’m going to have to be a tad conscious of the wind blowing. We don’t want a boo-boo now, do we?!

Floral Dress Denim Coat TopshopThis is a favourite neck piece of mine – isn’t it stunning? It reminds me a little of a vintage stamp. The gold / brown themes makes it an unusual yet perfect piece for this dress.

Orelia Jewellery Designs

Gold Small Jewellery Designs by Orelia

Last Friday, hoping to find an outfit for that evening, I made a flying visit to Topshop in Oxford Circus. Having chosen a cute outfit, I ran upstairs to the bedazzling section – better known as the jewellery dept. – to find some pieces that would help jazz up my little combi. Now, one thing I love about Topshop is their love and passion for promoting smaller concessions by stocking their designs and giving them the opportunity to reach a wider market. The British brand Orelia is a fine example of this, and their pieces are divine. Focusing on petit jewellery designs that come in both gold and silver, Orelia pieces are perfect for adding a small yet substantial addition to any outfit. These are some pieces that caught my eye during my trip last Friday – the Hayden necklace being my absolute favourite!

Neon Jewels

neon_jewellery_topshop_next_the_coup2Looks like Neon – 2012 trend that is hard to ignore, is here to stay with us a little longer. Only until I started writing this post I have realised that perhaps I have a mini obsession, because all of the jewellery pieces bought since Christmas, happened to be neon!
Above, is the set I got for Christmas from my best friend. Below, Topshop necklace and pink earrings from Next.
neon_jewellery_topshop_next_the_coupWith spring days fast approaching, these zingy items are a super fun way to add some colour! Here is what’s out on the high-street right now.

Interview with… Loukippi

This summer we were seeing a lot of crochet on the high street, after all nothing screams beach and sun like crochet!  Designs that offer a sexy glimpse of skin, without revealing too  much, and create a fresh and modern look. This week The Coup had a chat with Loukippi, a very talented designer behind hand-made crochet accessories. With these pieces you can take a piece of summer into the Autumn/Winter season. Collars (that are so hot right now) will add a touch of prep to your look, and delicate crochet jewellery is a boho classic. We are loving each and every piece!

Flower necklace 1915 (£18), three stacking bracelets (made to order, £6.60) and a crochet lace cuff (£12.35) all by Loukippi.

What made you decide to start your own business?

The birth of my daughter has radically changed my life, its rhythms and needs. I think I have rediscovered a need to express myself creatively, and therefore the decision to open a small Etsy shop has been a matter of course.

Where do you get your inspiration?
The first source is my love for the past, in particular for the so-called “Belle Epoque”. I find antique pattern books from that time really charming and inspiring. However also modern trends and artists, as many wonderful ones met on Etsy, inspire me a lot.

Do you create small production runs or make to order?
Some of my items require a quite long production time, therefore I replicate them but I can not create large runs; some are instead just one-of-a-kind items, as I love to try out new ideas and quit some old ones in the meanwhile.

What are your favourite fabrics to work with and why?
I love old fashioned fabrics, as taffeta and satin. However I mostly create my items with extra fine cotton thread. I use only 100% Italian threads, a very high quality cotton.

How would you define your style?
My scope would be a “modern antiquity”, turning antique patterns into modern trends. However I am just at the beginning of this style research, I am going on working…

Trend Alert: Seeing Stars

Now, we know that geometric jewellery has been going strong this year. Triangles and cubes add easy, modern touches to any look. Stars on the other hand have gained more of a high street presence and are becoming a micro trend. You could either try something subtle such as Perlota bracelet from Luisaviaroma or, if you feel like going full on bling, go to Kurt Geiger who has matching sets of star earrings, necklaces and rings! The star shape takes me back to my sweet childhood, and a very simple sterling silver ring I used to have as a little girl. Except for this time my stars are encrusted in diamonds. What a great way to take something into your adult life that reminds you of your fun, young days.

An Interview with… Nomilk Today

Here at The Coup we are all about discovering fresh and unique designs. So we are very proud to introduce our new feature called  ‘An Interview with…’ where we will bring your attention to uber creative and ambitious designers from all over the world. We hope you will fall in love with their work as much as we have!

Today we are introducing you to Nomilk Today, whose fresh, geometric designs tick all the right boxes when it comes to statement jewellery. With a theme of colour blocking, Nomilk Todays pieces are bound to receive a lot of compliments.  And, bonus, until Sunday evening, we are giving The Coup readers (you) an exclusive discount of 20% on all of Todays designs. Now that’s something to smile about :)

The Coup spoke to Eva, the owner, about her beginnings, inspirations and how she makes it work, being an agronomist and a jewellery designer.

Q: What made you decide to start your own business?
Being an agronomist student in Athens, and trying to cover my own expences I worked in different jobs while studying. Then in 2010 I had to write my thesis and my time was limited. Knowing that next year I would move to the Netherlands for an Msc, I had to find a way to work from home. So, already familiar with polymer clay, I started crafting. I found Etsy, I started with the usual polymer clay sculptures and after 4 months, I came up with the idea of a polymer clay vitreau. Little by little, I managed to do a lot of progress in the way I work on this technique, but still there is more to come.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?
I like to observe. A lot. I find inspiration in details around me but also on the internet. The more I browse, the more I see and get inspired. But most of all, my imagination makes the hard work here!

Q: What are your favourite materials to work with and why?
Polymer clay, definitely. Its so convenient and playful to work with, and I found out it has many more potentials than just the usual ones. Many people dont even realise that I work with polymer clay, because as far as I know, I was the first to use it to make this kind of vitreau.

Q: How would you define your style?
I really dont know how to answer this question. I suppose it depends on how someone incorporates my pieces in her wardrobe. But for sure nomilk today style is easy going and joyful!

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
On March 2011, when my work was featured on design-milk.com. This had a huge impact on the traffic in my shop and gave me a great boost!

Q: What would you like to do next?
Right now, I am just trying to make it work out together with studying. Its a bit tough, though. Next year I will finish the Msc and start working as an agronomist, but nomilk today is now part of me, I dont want to quit it! Maybe I ll do some seminars to work with silver and then combine the two means. My dream is to have my own farm in a Greek island. And then, you know farmer and jewelry designer-this is something I am looking forward to see!

Q: Do you create small production runs or make to order?
I do both, and I have to say I really like custom orders. I also accept wholesale orders for small boutiques.

Q: Where would our readers find your products for sale?
They can find my items on my Etsy page and can keep in touch through my facebook fan page

Jewellery Designs by Alice Menter

It was only recently that UK jewellery designer Alice Menter launched her label. Since, her beautiful, handmade, unique designs have deservingly been featured in powerhouse fashion magazines such as Marie Claire, Harpers Bazar and InStyle.

Photos taken by The Coup

Through incorporating the use of household items such as bolts and zips, Alice Menter’s designs perfect a harmonious balance between ‘hard and soft.’ This really is statement jewellery with a twist. Above are some of her beautiful designs that we saw at LFW;  you can check out her whole range here. I can’t wait to get my hand on a few pieces!

Anyone who knows me will be able to tell you that I’m totally ‘watch crazy.’ From silver to gold,  leopard print, black and even rose-coloured leather straps; you name the style, I can guarantee that I’ve either had it or a worthy alternative.

But I’ve had my eye on these Michael Kors treasures for a while now and I’m having a pretty hard time deciding which one should be my next investment. Fancy feeding my addiction by helping me chose? All comments are welcome – which one do you think should be my next purchase?

Stacked Up Pleasures

Three things that I love to do when I travel is to check out local culture, music and fashion. As someone who loves to have a few exclusives in my wardrobe, holiday shopping is a total must. Indulging and seeking out local brands, especially boutiques, is a great way to ensure your wardrobe remains unique and cutting edge.

So, about three weeks ago when I made a flying visit to Chicago, it was a total breath of fresh air when I came across Henri Bendel. The Bendel boutique has been around since 1875, so to you this may be old news, but to me it was news. With a range that includes a selection of fine handbags and jewellery, the Bendel brand is definitely the ‘beacon of luxury’ it aims to be.

Below is a selection of my favourite ‘Stacked’ up Bendel rings, made with the finest of Swarovski crystals and available in gold, rose gold and silver. We all need a statement ring or two to either vamp up or complete any outfit. These Bendel beauties guarantee to do just that!
